Leadership Note #2

Slow Down Long Enough to Ask Better Questions

One of the more difficult responsibilities of leadership is resisting the pressure to immediately solve the problem in front of you. A team needs another resource. A customer wants a new tool. A process is not working. A technology needs to be replaced.

A request for another resource may really be an accountability or operating-model problem. A request for a new tool may point to a gap in an existing platform. Moving directly to the solution can feel like progress, but it can leave the conditions that created the problem untouched.

Leadership is not about having the fastest answer. Sometimes it is about slowing down the decision long enough to ask better questions.
